Athletic Bilbao have announced that they will reinvest the money made from the sale of Javi Martinez in their youth ranks. Marcelo Bielsa’s side received €40m for the 23-year-old midfielder from Bayern Munich, and today revealed how they intend to spend that windfall.
“The money will be devoted to the organizational structure of youth football,” a statement read on their official website. “We will also invest in material resources and settle the outstanding amount of the deferral agreement with the Provincial Treasury.”
Some have called for Los Leones to instead use the money to pay a larger share in the building of their new stadium.
San Mames Barria, as it will be called, is currently under construction. Political parties in the north of the country have urged the club to cough up a higher percentage of the costs.
