Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini was left “very embarrassed” after seeing the most expensive team in world football lose 4-0 to a third tier village side Alcorcon in the Spanish King’s Cup. Real fielded a strong team but were 3-0 down to the Segunda Division B club by half-time in the round of 32 first leg.
Real fielded a strong team with Raul and €30m summer signing Karim Benzema, but they quickly found themselves 3-0 down at half-time thanks to Borja’s 16th-minute opener, an own goal from Alvaro Arbeloa in the 22nd minute, and a strike from Ernesto five minutes before the break.
Real are on a terrible run at the moment having won only one of their last five games, with three defeats. It is no surprise that this streak has coincided with the injury of the best player in the world, a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano apologized to fans but backed under-fire Pellegrini:
“It’s difficult and I know how the Madrid supporters must be feeling,” Valdano stated on the club’s website. “We have to take it as a lesson in humility that must serve as a starting point for a fresh beginning. We must stick together, and when I say ‘together’ I am also thinking about the coach.”
Pellegrini is under a lot of pressure and if Real loses to Getafe at the weekend or to AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, then I would not be surprised to see him get fired.
