I am shocked at baffled at this transfer window for Liverpool. With all the teams ahead of them in the table strengthening this summer, Liverpool finished with a positive net spend! et that sink in for minute. In a summer of unseen riches for every Premier League club, with over £1B spent on transfers, Liverpool made a profit in the transfer market. Did Fenway Sports Group need help paying for the new stand?
Liverpool Signings:
Sadio Mané Southampton £30m; Georginio Wijnaldum Newcastle United £25m; Loris Karius Mainz £4.7m; Ragnar Klavan Augsburg £4.25m; Joël Matip Schalke (free)
Liverpool Departures
Christian Benteke Crystal Palace £27m; Jordon Ibe Bournemouth £15m; Joe Allen Stoke City £13m; Martin Skrtel Fenerbahce £5m; Luis Alberto Lazio £4.3m; Brad Smith Bournemouth £3m; Jon Flanagan Burnley (loan); Kolo Touré Celtic (free); Mario Balotelli Nice (free); Lazar Markovic Sporting Lisbon (loan)
Good Window?
I like the signings of Sadio Mané and Georginio Wijnaldum, while Joël Matip looks to be a bargain signing as does Loris Karius when he gets fit.
But how Liverpool were unable to sign a left-back this summer is beyond me. Surely Klopp does not feel that Moreno and Milner are the answers?
Only Chelsea have moved on or released as many players as Liverpool this summer and it is clear that Klopp wanted to rid the club of a lot of Brendan Rodger’s signings. Gone are Christian Benteke, Joe Allen, Jordon Ibe, Martin Skrtel and Mario Balotelli.
Grade
This feels like a transitional window for Klopp as the got rid of a lot of dead wood, and started to bring in some of his players.
That being said, I still don’t understand not strengthening the defense, especially after the first two games of the season showed it was not good enough.
All in all, good outs but could’ve done with two marquee defenders arriving which is why I give Liverpool a C.
What did you think of Liverpool’s transfer dealing? Happy? Unhappy?
