Liverpool have officially announced they have completed the signing of goalkeeper Loris Karius from FSV Mainz.
The shot-stopper joins the Reds on a long term contract after Liverpool meet his release clause at the German club. That release clause is reported to be around £4.7 million, which is a bargain for the Reds new No.1
Upon joining the Reds, Karius told the club’s official website:
“It’s a very good feeling and it’s an honour to play for a club like this.
“They have a special history and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield.
“I know a lot about the club from watching them on TV. The history, everybody who plays football knows. There a lot of things in my head when I think of this club.
“I spoke to the manager and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players.
“It was a good talk with him and after that I was convinced this was the right decision.”
Liverpool fans have been calling on their club to invest in a new goalkeeper all season following some less than convincing performances by Simon Mignolet.
The Belgian made six defensive errors this season, more than any other player in the Premier League. In Karius, they get a 22-year-old who kept nine clean-sheets for his side in the league this campaign.
Jurgen Klopp is obviously very familiar with Karius from his time in the Bundesliga and it is not a surprise that he headed back to Germany to solve one of the Reds biggest weaknesses.
