Ask Arsenal fans what the Gunners biggest needs are this summer and they will probably start with a world class defensive midfielder and center back. But according to the Metro, Arsene Wenger is looking to spend a significant part of his summer transfer kitty on Juventus striker Alvaro Morata.
The 22-year-old Morata is a product of the Real Madrid academy. Unable to break into the Real line-up, the Spain U21 international made the move to Juve in the summer where he has scored six goals in 20 league games this season. Not a bad return considering that a number of those appearances (13) have been off the bench as the likes of Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez continue to keep him out of the team.
A £60 million transfer seems crazy for a player who has not been able to hold down a regular starting role in other Madrid or Turin. One reason for the inflated fee is that Real have a €30 million buy-back option they are not willing to take, instead asking Juventus to split the money received for the youngster.
Arsenal are not the only Premier League side linked with Morata, as Liverpool are reported to be also interested. But the Metro reported earlier this week that Arsenal had beaten the Reds to his signature.
Not only does the transfer fee seem ridiculously high, but don’t Arsenal have enough strikers in the form of Giroud, Welbeck, Sanchez and Walcott? If Arsene Wenger felt that he needed to bring in another striker this summer, for that kind of money, surely he be able to attract a more proven goalscorer.
What do you think of the Morata to Arsenal transfer rumor? Is he someone the Gunners need to sign?
