A a result of failing Uefa’s Financial Fair Play standards, Manchester City are in the uncomfortable position of having to drop someone when they name their squad for the Champions League knockout stages.
The arrival of Wilfried Bony in January means that City now have 17 non-homegrown players in their squad but, they can only register 16 in European competitions this season.
City’s 17 foreigners are: Willy Caballero, Bacary Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis, Eliaquim Mangala, Aleksandar Kolarov, Fernando, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri, David Silva, Stevan Jovetic, Edin Dzeko, Wilfried Bony, Sergio Aguero.
The most likely player to be dropped is striker Stevan Jovetic who has started only 18 games in an injury-hit 19 months at City, is yet to score a European goal for the club and, with Bony providing an alternative attacking outlet, could make way in a move that would raise doubts about his future at the club.
Another possible candidate is left back Aleksandar Kolarov. Kolarov has only made four starts since October as Gael Clichy has become established as the first choice With the ability of right-backs Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta to operate on both flanks, dropping Kolaroiv would not be a stretch.
