After wasting a week, Inter Milan have finally sacked head coach Walter Mazzarri, with former Inter boss Roberto Mancini the leading candidate to take over at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
A statement on the Inter website read:
FC Internazionale would like to announce that Walter Mazzarri has been relieved of his duties as first team coach. The club would like to thank Mazzarri for the commitment, dedication and professionalism he showed over his 17 months in charge. Today’s training session will be taken by Giuseppe Baresi.
Mazzarri has been under intense pressure as Inter are languishing in ninth place in the table after a summer of heavy spending, bringing in Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic among others.
After last weekend’s 2-2 home draw against Verona, the third consecutive game the Nerazzurri had failed to win, rumors were flying that Mazzarri would be fired. But after meeting with Inter president Erick Thohir, the former Napoli boss appeared to have held onto his job.
But after wasting the best part of a week to get a new manager in and turning the club around, Thohir finally fired his first coach with Mancini waiting in the sidelines.
Mancini is a fan favorite at Inter, something that Mazzarri never was, after winning the title in three consecutive years between 2005 and 2008.
