Under fire Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri has been given a public vote of confidence by club president Erick Thohir after back-to-back Serie A defeats.
After an impressive start to the season, the Nerazzurri have started leaking goals at an alarming rate, conceding seven goals in their last two matches, which has seen them slip to 10th place in the standings, 10 points behind leaders Juventus.
Mazzarri has started to lose the faith of the Inter fans, but Thohir is standing by him for now, convinced he will turn things around.
“The defeats to Cagliari and Fiorentina may have shaken us a bit, but I am sure that everybody has a strong desire to improve things,” Thohir said on the club’s website.
“”The defeats against Cagliari and Fiorentina may have come as a bit of a shock, but I’m sure that everybody is desperate to improve.
Serie A is extremely competitive so we must be patient. We need to closely analyse the period the team is going through and we hope that the international break gives us the chance to do that.
We’ll see what we need to do; I can’t talk about what type of players in which positions we’ll look to bring in. Perhaps we need another midfielder at the same level as Hernanes and Kovacic and also a striker who can win high balls. I can’t say anything further because we still need to evaluate everything.
The defence is fine and the midfield is doing well too – we have important players who are performing to a high standard, such as Kovacic, Medel and Hernanes.
Mazzarri will do his best for Inter and we will give him the time he needs. He will continue to have our support. The players now need to have a period of introspection in order to prepare for the next match in the best way possible.””
After the international break Inter face fellow top-three contenders Napoli and despite Thohir’s comments this week, a third straight defeat could see a coaching change at Inter.
