According to the BBC web site, Liverpool have turned down a £30m bid from Arsenal for striker Luis Suarez. According to media reports, the bid was instantly rejected by Liverpool.
Suarez has been at the centre of transfer speculation since saying in May that it would be a “good moment for a change”, and admitted it would be “difficult to say no” to Real Madrid. However Liverpool have insisted all summer that the Uruguayan striker is not for sale.
While Liverpool insist that Suarez is not for sale, the Sunday People have reported that Saurez has a £40million release clause in his contract. It will be interesting to see what happens if Arsenal come back with a higher bid of around £40m as my understanding is that Liverpool woud have to sell him at that price.
Suarez was brilliant for Liverpool last season scoring 23 goals and adding five assists in 33 Premier League games last season.
However, his play and goals were overshadowed by his 10 match suspension for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic Liverpool last season, six of which will be served at the beginning of the new season.
Arsenal have now been linked with Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez this summer as Arsene Wenger tries to spend the cash to make the Gunners title contender again. But if Arsenal were really serious about signing Suarez, woud they not just make an offer of £40m and trigger the release?
The BBC’s chief football writer Phil McNulty does not see expect Suarez to end up at Arsenal saying:
“Arsenal’s approach for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is a sign of ambition but in reality is doomed to failure.
“Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a huge admirer of Suarez’s wonderful attacking talent but too many obstacles make an actual deal look impossible.
“Liverpool will know only too well how it would be greeted by supporters if they sold their world-class striker to Arsenal and Suarez himself has publicly claimed his discontent comes from what he perceives – somewhat fancifully – as his harsh treatment by the English media.
“This surely rules out a move within the Premier League.
“Arsenal’s interest in Suarez may reach the ears of those at Real Madrid – the striker’s most likely next destination if he leaves Anfield – and remind them they are willing to pursue other targets as they try to get their own long-drawn out deal to prise Gonzalo Higuain away from the Bernabeu over the line.”
