AC Milan’s miserable start to the new season continues as they lost for the second time at home this season, today losing 1-0 to Atalanta. Ironically neither Milan club, Inter or AC, have managed a win in five attempts at the San Siro this season.
The warning signs were there for the Rossoneri, beaten 1-0 by UC Sampdoria in their opening match of the season, early on as a nippy Atalanta attack threatened. Germán Denis went closest with a low shot off the base of a post from the edge of the penalty area on 22 minutes. Milan came back into the game and Stephan El Sharaawy forced Andrea Consigli into a fine double save.
Both goalkeepers were tested in an exciting start to the second period, but as Milan began to control possession, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 64th minute when Luca Cigarini met a bouncing ball just outside the area and fired a first-time, left-footed effort beyond Christian Abbiati.
Milan pushed for a leveller, but Atalanta withstood the pressure and ultimately only a fine tip over by Abbiati prevented Maximiliano Moralez from making it 2-0.
The result left Milan with only three points from their opening three games, while Atalanta now have two points having started the campaign with a two-point deduction.
In today’s other game Palermo and Cagliari shared the points in a 1-1 draw following maiden Serie A goals from Egidio Arevalo Rios and Marco Sau
The Uruguayan scored five minutes before half-time to give Palermo the lead, but Sau’s reply two minutes from the end meant both sides failed to get the win they were looking for and the 1-1 draw leaves both island clubs still searching for their first wins of the season.
