New PSV signing Mark van Bommel will take up a coaching role at the club once he retires.
The Netherlands international signed a one-year contract with the Dutch side yesterday after joining from AC Milan.
The 35-year-old spent six years at PSV earlier in his career, winning four Eredivisie titles, and the club’s technical director Marcel Brands says he remains a fans’ favourite.
“This is a special moment in particular for the fans who have been waiting for his return for such a long time,” Brands said.
“Van Bommel told me only recently that he would leave Milan to rejoin PSV. We have agreed Mark will take up a coaching role with PSV when he hangs up his boots.”
Van Bommel insists he can help PSV win the league title next year for the first time since 2008. The Eindhoven heavyweights finished third last season, seven points behind champions Ajax.
“I believe I can still be of value to this team and help PSV win back the title after a number of years,” the former Bayern Munich midfielder said. “It’s my ambition to write a new chapter in the club’s history.
“In Italy, they don’t look at whether you are young or old. You are good or bad and in Italy they still think I’m good.”
