Manchester City needed another second-half comeback to beat Spurs 2-1, while Luis Suarez and John Terry grabbed the headline at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea and Liverpool drew 1-1.
At the Eithad, Manchester City maintained their unbeaten start to the season, but Roberto Mancini will not be happy that his side conceded again from a set piece.
On Tuesday, Ajax scored twice from corners and it took Spurs just 21 minutes to exploit that weakness again. Tom Huddlestone’s cross was met by defender Steven Caulker, whose header squirmed through the hands of Joe Hart.
But when you watch City play, they have so many goal scoring options that you never feel that they are out of the game. And once again it was a moment of individual brilliance from Sergio Agüero that got City back on level terms, slipping past Caulker and sliding in a sublime finish.
That set the stage for super-sub Edin Džeko to once again wrap up all three points for City with his seventh goal of the season, six of which have came from the bench.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s poor league form continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Liverpool. Chelsea went ahead in the 20th minute when John Terry was left unmarked to head in Juan Mata’s corner.
Later in the half Terry and Luis Suarez collided and the Chelsea captain was carried on a stretcher with a suspected serious knee injury.
Chelsea dominated the game with Oscar and Mata both missing great opportunities and Liverpool made then pay for their lack of clinical finishing when Luis Suárez headed home from Jamie Carragher’s flick-on.
With the draw Chelsea have only picked up two points from their last three league games, a run that has seen them fall to third place in the table, three points behind Manchester United.
Meanwhile, West Ham moved up to sixth after beating Newcastle United 1-0 at St. James Park thanks to a Kevin Nolan goal in the 39th-minute. After a fantastic year last season, Newcastle seems to be struggling with higher expectations and playing in the Europa League. They have only picked up three wins in the league this season for 14 points, compared to seven wins and 25 points at this point last season.
