Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has been discharged from the hospital today, 40 days after undergoing a liver transplant at Hospital Barcaclinic on April 10.
According to Mundo Deportivo it is unlikely that the former French international will ever play professional football again. During his 12 year career, Abidal won three Ligue 1 titles (with Lyon), three La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues and two FIFA Club World Cups. He also made 61 appearances for France, and was a starter in the French side that lost in the 2006 World Cup Final to Italy.
Abidal was admitted to hospital on April 10th to undergo a liver transplant after more problems occured following a cancerous tumour in 2011.
He famously recovered in March 2011 after having the tumour removed from his liver and returned to play the full 90 minutes in the Champions League final of that season and lift the trophy.
