Spain’s poor form in friendlies continued Tuesday when they needed a stoppage-time goal from David Villa ij order to get a 2-2 draw at Costa Rica.
Spain fell behind after an uncharacteristic howler from captain Iker Casillas. The Real Madrid goalkeeper miscontrolled the ball near the edge of the penalty area just after the half hour, allowing Randall Brenes to lift the ball into the empty net.
If that wasn’t bad enough, right before halftime Spain found themselves 2-0 down when Joel Campbell was given too much space on the right and curled a fine left-foot effort past Casillas from distance.
Not sure what Vicente del Bosque said at half-time but Spain played with a lot more urgency and energy in the second half.
First Iniesta saw a shot narrowly go over the bar after a great run and then David Villa drew a fine save from Keilor Navas with a powerfully-struck free-kick.
Del Bosque threw on Fernando Torres, David Silva, Santi Cazorla and Jesus Navas and as Spain mounted attack after attack Silva finally found the net in the 83rd minute before Villa nodded in a Santi Cazorla free-kick for the last-gasp equaliser.
