Ashley Cole has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association in relation to a Twitter comment he posted about the governing body.
Responding to the FA’s judgement in the John Terry racism case, he tweeted on Friday: “Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFT***S”.
A brief statement on the FA’s website read:
“Ashley Cole has been charged by The FA in relation to a Twitter comment which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.”
Cole deleted the message on Friday and then issued an “unreserved apology” to the FA in a statement that read:
“I had just finished training and saw the captions on the TV screens in the treatment rooms about what was said in the FA commission ruling about me.
“I was really upset and tweeted my feelings in the heat of the moment. I apologise unreservedly for my comment about the FA.”
Former England captain Alan Shearer told the BBC at the weekend that Cole should be banned for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against San Marino as a punishment. Cole has won 98 England caps and could reach the 100-mark if he appears in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.
Cole also faces a potential fine from Chelsea for his tweet, as Chelsea’s management was not amused by the firestorm that he created last week.
