Surprise surprise but after four matches, the top four in the Premier League are Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal and Man City. Cream always rises to the top.
Leaders Chelsea maintained their position atop of the Premier League despite being held a dull goalless draw against west London rivals QPR. While all the talk after the match will be about Anton Ferdinand refusing to shake the hands of John Terry and Ashley Cole, that should not detract from a really poor performance by Chelsea, who know have to regroup ahead of next week’s Champions League encounter with Italian giants at Stamford Bridge.
After two scoreless games to start the new season, many were wondering where the Arsenal goals would come from this season, with the departure of Robin van Persie to Man United. The answer is everyone as Arsenal thrashed Southampton 6-1 at the Emirates today
The Gunners went in front on 11 minutes thanks to a Jos Hooiveld own goal before Lukas Podolski, Gervinho and another own goal from Nathaniel Clyne made it 4-0 at half time. Gervinho grabbed his second of the game with twenty minutes remaining before substitute Theo Walcott added a sixth goal late on.
Newly-promoted Southampton remain rock bottom with zero points from four games, although to be fair to the Saints, three of their first four matches were against Man City, Man United and Arsenal. Rough introduction to the Premier League!
At Old Trafford, Manchester United romped to a 4-0 victory against Wigan at Old Trafford, despite Javier Hernandez missing an early penalty. A flurry of second half goals from Paul Scholes, Hernandez, Alex Buttner and Nick Powell was too much for Wigan and moved United into second place in the table.
Champions Manchester City continue to have problems keeping clean sheets, as they conceded another goal today in drawing 1-1 at Stoke. A Peter Crouch effort had the Potters ahead on 15 minutes before newly-signed Javi Garcia headed City level in the 35th minute to keep them unbeaten this term.
Roberto Mancini will have his work cut out for himself on the training ground working on City’s defensive problems before City travel to the Bernabéu to play Real Madrid next week.
Brendan Rodgers poor start as Liverpool manager continues as he Liverpool drew 1-1 away to Sunderland today. Luis Suarez’s equalizer means that Liverpool have picked up only two points from a possible 12 so far this season, and they sit one place above the relegation zone.
One side that leapfrogged Liverpool today in the table was Aston Villa who won their first game of the season, beating Swansea 2-0.
Elsewhere, a pair of goals from Dimitar Berbatov and late strike from Steve Sidwell gave Fulham a 3-0 win at home against West Brom, while in the day’s early game Norwich and West Ham played out a 0-0 draw.
