Reports are coming out of Spain that Arsenal are on the verge of signing Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin on a season long loan.
The 23-year-old Sahin joined Madrid from Borussia Dortmund last summer but has failed to establish a himself at the Bernabéu. Sahin was linked with a move to Spurs as part of the Modric to Real Madrid deal, but it appears that he will be heading to the red side of north London instead.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho was asked about Sahin leaving Madrid and this is what he had to say:
“The market is open until 31st August and I never liked that because you start the pre-season and the league and it leaves time for lots of player exits. I want a squad of 20 players plus goalkeepers because I want to leave one slot open and leave the door open for the younger players. Someone has to come out and try to be honest with players. Nuri is in the group of players between the teams and if a good opportunity to play comes along we believe that is better for him to take it and go elsewhere to play his football this season”.
With the injuries to Thomas Rosický and Jack Wilshere, Arsenal are short of bodies in midfield and Sahin, who is a terrific talent, would fit the bill perfectly. Much prefer him over Yann M’Vila.
While much of the focus has been on whether Robin van Persie will stay at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger has quietly been adding to the quality of the Arsenal squad. Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud have already arrived at the Emirates and it appears that Malaga winger Santi Cazorla and now Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin will be arriving soon. That will be four quality players that the Gunners will have added.
