Reports in Tuesday’s newspapers say that Chelsea have signed Brazilian wonderkid Oscar for £25million, who is regarded as one of the most exciting talents to emerge from Brazil in years.
To make the purchase even sweeter, Chelsea reportedly outbid Spurs and Andre Villas-Boas for the 20-year-old.
Reports surfaced last week that Tottenham had made an initial offer of around £18m for Oscar, but that Chelsea quickly put together an offer that Spurs could not match.
Oscar shot to prominence last summer when he became the first player to score a hat-trick in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup final against Portugal.
The Brazilian usually plays in the playmaker role behind, although he is said to be equally comfortable on the left or right of midfield. He is described as a ‘typically brilliant Brazilian No 10′.
Chelsea fans will be able to get an early sight of the new signing as he is also a member of his country’s Olympic squad.
The signing boosts the Brazilian contingent at Stamford Bridge, where Oscar will be joining Ramires, David Luiz and exciting young prospect Lucas Piazon.
From what I have seen and heard, Oscar is a great talent. I just wonder where he will fit into the Chelsea line-up and Juan Mata and Eden Hazard also like to play in the hole behind the striker. Is there anyway that Di Matteo can play all three of them together at the same time?
There is no doubt that Abramovich was stunned by the criticism of Chelsea’s defensive play in theChampions League and wants to add more flair and playmaking to the side this season. I just wonder how all these playmakers are going to fit together? It might be that Di Matteo ends up playing the Spain formation with no striker in an attempt to get all these “Number 10′s on the pitch at the same time!
With the signing of Oscar, plus the earlier deals for Marko Marin and Eden Hazard, Chelsea have spent around £67m on new signings this summer. And Roman Abramovich is not done yet as Chelsea continue to be linked with another Brazilian star, 25-year-old striker Hulk of Porto.
If the Hulk deal goes through, Chelsea will have spent around £100m in this transfer window. Will anyone else come close to that?
