Much to the relief of Inter fans everyone, the club has fired Gian Piero Gasperini, who failed to win a game while in charge of Inter. Gasperini’s downfall was due to his insistence that Inter play with three defenders and five midfield players, a formation that is not suited to the Inter line-up.
Within hours of the firing of Gasperini, Inter were linked with former Chelsea and Juve boss Claudio Ranieri and today Inter officially the hiring of Raniero, who signed an 18-month contract with Inter.
A statement on the Inter web site read:
“Claudio Ranieri is officially the new coach of Inter. All of Inter has the pleasure of welcoming Claudio Ranieri and his staff. He will guide today’s training session and will be unveiled tomorrow to the press.”
Since Inter President Massimo Moratti took over in the 1994-95 season, Inter are now on their 18th coach. Since Jose Mourinho left a little over a year ago, Ranieri is Inter’s fourth manager.
The knock on Ranieri is that he has never really won anything as a manager. His only trophies an Italian Cup in 1996 with Fiorentina and a Spanish Cup with Valencia three years later.
Explaining Ranieri’s hiring, Inter’s president, Massimo Moratti said that the former Roma’s coach experience is the main factor being considered by the club’s management in this difficult time. Moratti believes that in this tough time, getting an experienced tactician would be the most sensible move especially to lift the players’ spirit for the upcoming matches,.
“He is undoubtedly the best choice we could find. He has the common sense needed to revitalise the team. I am satisfied with the choice of Ranieri – at this moment we need experience,” Moratti revealed. “Should the performance improve? I do not care, all that counts is to win on Saturday [against Bologna].”
Inter fans are not convinced that Ranieri is the right man for the Nerazzurri, and the fact that he is only signed a deal through the end of next season tells me that Moratti is not sure if he is the long term solution also.
