After 92+ minutes I was resigned to another Arsenal draw. A draw that would leave Arsenal six points behind Man United with six games to go.
Then Fabregas gets tripped in the box and Robin van Persie steps up to score a huge penalty deep into stoppage time and I thought that the Gunners had escaped with all three points.
Then with the last kick of the game, Dirk Kuyt scores from the penalty spot after Eboue had pushed Lucas.
Ahh the swings in emotion of following the Gunners!!
Yes the penalty call on Eboue was soft but what was he thinking? There were seconds left in the game, Lucas was going away from goal, there was no need to get that close to him and cause any contact. From his reaction, you knew that he realized that he had caused the penalty.
The penalty, and the arguments about whether it was or not will overshadow what was a another poor Arsenal performance.
Arsenal have not won at home in the league since 23 February when they beat Stoke 1-0. Since then they have played three homes games, drawing them all against Sunderland, Blackburn and Liverpool. That is simply not good enough.
Once again Arsenal tried to play everything through the middle today, especially after Theo Walcott was taken off after 74 minutes. When will Arsenal adjust to packed defenses and try to get past them down the outside?
As for Liverpool, I continue to be impressed with the job that Kenny Dalglish is doing. At one point in the second half, Liverpool had four teenagers on the pitch. Kenny’s kids overcame injuries to Jamie Carragher (head) and Andy Carroll (knee) as well as the late penalty call on Jay Spearing and they still were able to pick themselves up and steal a point at the end of the game.
I really expect Liverpool to be a top four team next season. The addition of three our four players, plus a fit Gerrard, in addition to the kids, Suarez and Carroll Liverpool have the base in place to content again next season.
