Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber was in Miami today for a town hall meeting and made some interesting comments about the MLS’s future expansion plans.
Gerber was asked about of the possibility of getting a MLS team back in South Florida. The Miami Fusion played in MLS from 1998 through 2001.
“We want to be here,” Garber said. “It’s inconceivable for a pro league not to be south of Washington, DC.”
Importantly though Garber said the league’s current emphasis is to make a second team in the New York City area as the 20th team in MLS.
“In New York, we have a dire need to go out and capture a broader part of the market,” Garber said. “We have many interested ownership groups, with a wide variety of potential stadium plans. In Miami, we’re not sure. We’re still scratching our head about the market. And we’ve had no progress with a potential owner.”
